About The Attic Artists Group

The Attic Artists is a small group of 34 ordinary people with exceptional talent, who paint together on a monthly basis. Thirteen years ago, the 8 original charter members decided to meet regularly to just paint. The ongoing support from the members kept everyone painting every month. Since most were from St Paul and surrounding areas, they started to meet in an unfinished 2nd floor attic of one of the East Side members. Thus the name: The Attic Artists.

Some members have advanced degrees in a variety of areas including: Management, Science, Library Sciences, and Nursing. Others have design or Art degrees or are pursuing degrees. Some are young enough to still be in school. Others are retired. Most just paint for fun!

During the summer days, the group goes out on location to parks, lakes or gardens to be outside in the landscapes they all love to paint. Painting plein air has its challenges! The heat and humidity, the breezes of summer, the weather! The rapidly changing shadows and color ranges are a challenge for painting on location.

In the spring, the group goes to Lanesboro for a weekend-painting-retreat. We do instructional demos for each other, and offer a critique at the end of the retreat on the paintings completed that weekend. We also have time to attend a play, go to a wonderful dinner and explore Lanesboro…a wonderful artistic town!

The Attic Artists have had 6 major shows starting in October 2000 at the Prosperity Bank Building, then two years at Metropolitan State, and two years at the Lake Elmo Regional Center for the arts. Last year, our 2010 Fall Show was again at Metropolitan State Founders Hall Reception area in conjunction with the St Paul Art Crawl. The show hung Oct 1st through the 30th.

15 members displayed their framed art throughout the Gallery. Family, friends and interested patrons attend. There were many paintings for sale along with note cards from original paintings.

The artist group has now produced over 200 designs in note cards from original paintings, and all are for sale at various functions throughout the year. Many will soon be available online.
